Learning to Trust – Baby Steps

Are there are moments in your life when you are so scared to take that next step? What if you knew you weren’t taking that step alone? Read this guest blog about baby steps of trust and how God is right there with you each step of the way.

The Lord directs the steps of the godly.

He delights in every detail of their lives.

Though they stumble, they will never fall,

for the Lord holds them by the hand.

Psalm 37:23-24 (NLT)

Way back when my oldest son was learning to walk, I thought it was funny that some little steps he was so hesitant to take, even though I was right there to catch him. Then other steps he took without a second thought. And yet if I wouldn’t have been right there, he would have face planted in to the ground.

That is so much like our relationship with our Heavenly Father. I thought that then, and I can’t help but think it now, as I watch my young twins (a son and a daughter) figure out which steps to confidently take alone and which steps to take with caution.

There are moments in life, when we are so scared to take that next step, because we forget that God is right there.

When a baby is learning to walk, his or her parents are often right behind them, just out of their view, but there to catch them the minute they fall. That’s how I think of where God is, just following us, with His hands hovering in case we fall. Just because we can’t see Him doesn’t mean He isn’t there. He is there.

So be strong and courageous!

Do not be afraid and do not panic before them.

For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you.

He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT)

As for those steps we think we are big enough or ready enough to take, but we really are not, God is still right there! My youngest son loves to climb up the stairs. When he does, I tell him, “No, no!” and bring him back down to the ground. Am I being a mean Momma? Of course not. I’m protecting him from falling and getting hurt! It’s not that I’m trying to hold him back in not letting him climb the steps, it’s that I can see he is just not quite ready to do it alone yet!

I believe that sometimes God stops us from doing something, or keeps something from us because, we aren’t ready yet either. If you look accurately at God for who He is, a loving, caring, gracious and kind Father, our perfect Heavenly Father...then understanding His nature and character might change your perspective about how you look at life’s circumstances!
